David Richards is a British motorsport executive, former rally co-driver and entrepreneur, best known as the founder and chairman of Prodrive. After competing successfully as a co-driver, including winning the 1981 World Rally Championship alongside Ari Vatanen, he founded Prodrive in 1984 with Ian Parry. Under his leadership, Prodrive became one of the most important independent motorsport engineering companies, running major programmes in rallying, touring cars, GT racing and endurance racing. Richards is especially associated with Subaru’s World Rally Championship programme, through which Prodrive developed and operated the Subaru World Rally Team, achieving international success with the Legacy, Impreza 555 and later Impreza WRC. He has also held senior roles in Formula One and international motorsport governance, making him one of the most influential British figures in modern motorsport management and engineering.
