Karl Rabe (1895–1968) was an Austrian engineer and one of Ferdinand Porsche’s closest technical collaborators. He first worked with Porsche at Austro-Daimler, later joining him again at Steyr before becoming chief designer of the Porsche engineering office founded in 1931. Rabe contributed to numerous patents and technical solutions used in Volkswagen and early Porsche designs, including transmission, differential and engine-related developments. After the Second World War, he worked with Ferry Porsche on the first Porsche sports car projects that led to the 356. He remained Porsche’s chief designer through the development of the 901/911 and retired at the end of 1965, continuing thereafter as a consultant until his death in 1968.
