Herbert Linge (1928–2024) was a German engineer, test driver and racing driver whose career was closely linked to Porsche from its earliest post-war years. One of the company’s first apprentices, he later worked as a mechanic, development driver and competition driver, contributing to the development of Porsche road and racing cars, including the early 901/911. In competition he achieved numerous class victories, including at the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio and Le Mans, and won the 1960 Tour de Corse. He is also remembered for the famous episode at the 1954 Mille Miglia, when he and Hans Herrmann ducked beneath a closing railway barrier in their Porsche 550 Spyder. Linge later played an important role in establishing Porsche’s Weissach test centre and in improving motorsport safety through the ONS safety organisation.
