#HansMezger

Hans Mezger (1929–2020) was a German automotive engineer whose career was closely associated with Porsche. After joining the company in 1956, one of his first assignments involved the valve train of Ernst Fuhrmann’s Carrera engine. In 1959 he moved to the design department and worked on the Type 804 Formula 1 flat-eight engine. He subsequently took design responsibility for the first production engine of the Porsche 901/911 and later headed Porsche’s Race Design department, which developed cars including the 917. Mezger also played a central role in Porsche’s turbocharging programmes, from the 917/30 to the 911 Turbo, and was responsible for the TAG-Porsche turbocharged Formula 1 engine used by McLaren in the 1980s. He retired from Porsche in 1994.
