#GiroAutomobilisticoCalabrie
The race was a one-day endurance event covering 770 km along the provincial roads of Calabria, starting from Catanzaro and crossing all five current provinces. The route was designed in the shape of a large figure-eight, taking competitors along both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts before climbing into the mountainous inland regions. This layout included fast coastal stretches and challenging, winding roads, making it a demanding test for both drivers and vehicles. Held from 1949 to 1959, the race ran for nine consecutive editions, becoming one of the most important open-road competitions in southern Italy. It attracted well-known Italian racing figures, as well as various sports and GT cars from major manufacturers like Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia. Given the long distance and the mix of terrain, the race required a balance between speed and mechanical endurance, with drivers facing frequent elevation changes, unpredictable road surfaces, and varying weather conditions. Like many other road races of the era, it was eventually discontinued due to increasing safety concerns and the growing shift towards circuit-based competitions, which offered better control over race conditions and spectator security.
