Moss was in superb form and undoubtedly the fastest car on the Monsanto circuit. He drove a Porsche Spyder loaned by the factory and entered by the Portuguese agents. Though he had never driven the model before, he quickly adapted to its handling and confidently tackled the twisting layout of the Lisbon road course. In practice, he lapped the 5.44 km circuit in 2 minutes and 27.27 seconds. The race itself spanned 25 laps, and Moss completed it in 1 hour, 2 minutes, and 36.33 seconds, ultimately lapping all other competitors. Average speed 130.34 km/h.

John Edgar, formerly of Troy, Ohio and of Los Angeles, California —and a noted big spender as financial investor,—bought the car from the team managers of German driver Hans Herrmann after Sebring, as reported in the contemporary press. He did so at the request of driver Jack McAfee, a Volkswagen dealer. In addition to this Porsche 550 Spyder, Edgar owned another 550 Spyder, two Ferraris—one 4.9-litre and one 3.5-litre—a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, and an Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Note:
Grid: 5th. One of the most remote entries ever seen at Cumberland was John Edgar who received a brand-new Ferrari just two days before the event. The car was delivered by a special transporter from New York. The driver, Jack McAfee (also a Californian), had already taken victory at the 1956 Pebble Beach race. Walt Hansgen defeated McAfee in the main event at an average speed of 67.2 mph. McAfee’s new Ferrari had failed during practice, so he competed with the Porsche 550. The race number painted on the car was 188 and was changed to 80 simply by erasing the ‘1’ and applying white sheets over the center of the second ‘8’. With that same car, he won the E and F modified race and finished second in the B, C, and D modified race.

Oil got on the rear wheels and caused McAfee to spin out and return to the pits (smoking engine).

Edgar, who had known Loretta “Tetta” Turnbull Richert since their outboard hydroplane racing days, entrusted the car to her for several months. Tetta posed for publicity photos with the Porsche and competed in local events, notably at Hawaii’s 1957 Speed Week, where she initially planned to drive Edgar’s Spyder in the Gold Cup Challenge. However, Edgar had second thoughts, and young Lance Reventlow was given the wheel after a faster test run. Meanwhile, Reventlow’s mother, Woolworth heiress Barbara “Babs” Hutton, was staying at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, where she struck up a rapport with Edgar. One thing led to another, and her son Lance secured the seat in Edgar’s Porsche instead of Tetta. Despite this, Tetta still managed to race the 550 in the All-Islanders event, finishing well down the order. Loretta Richert turned in the best speed among women drivers. On Friday, 19/04/1957, the Hawaii Speed Week Record was certified at 127.87 M.P.H. for Loretta Richert.
