#AlfaRomeo

Alfa Romeo traces its origins to the Società Italiana Automobili Darracq, established in Italy in 1906 and later based in the Portello district of Milan. Following the company’s financial difficulties, managing director Ugo Stella promoted the creation of a new concern. On 24 June 1910, A.L.F.A. — Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili — was officially established, with Giuseppe Merosi as chief engineer. In 1915 control of the company passed to the Neapolitan engineer and entrepreneur Nicola Romeo; the Alfa Romeo name was adopted in the following years and first appeared on a production car in 1920. During the 1920s and 1930s the marque established a strong reputation in engineering and motor racing, with models including the P2, 6C and 8C. In 1933 Alfa Romeo came under the control of the state-owned IRI. After the Second World War, the company progressively moved from limited-production and competition-oriented cars towards larger-scale manufacture, beginning with the 1900 in 1950 and continuing with the Giulietta, Giulia and Alfetta. The 158 and 159 “Alfetta” also brought Alfa Romeo the first two Formula One World Championships in 1950 and 1951. Acquired by the Fiat Group in 1986, Alfa Romeo later became part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and, since 2021, Stellantis. Its emblem, combining the red cross of Milan with the Visconti biscione, has remained the marque’s principal identifying symbol since 1910.
