Lancia Automobiles is one of the oldest Italian car manufacturers. It was founded in Turin in 1906 by Vincenzo Lancia, a former Fiat test driver and racing enthusiast, with the aim of producing refined, technically innovative vehicles. From its earliest models, Lancia stood out for its engineering excellence, pioneering solutions such as monocoque construction, independent suspension, and narrow-angle V-type engines. Throughout the interwar period and into the 1950s, the company earned a reputation for understated elegance and mechanical sophistication, becoming a symbol of Italian automotive craftsmanship. Lancia remained an independent company until 1958, when it was acquired by Carlo Pesenti, an industrialist and owner of Italcementi. Under Pesenti’s ownership, Lancia continued to produce technically advanced cars, but rising production costs and limited economies of scale placed pressure on the company’s finances. In 1969, facing a hostile takeover attempt by financier Michele Sindona, Pesenti sold Lancia to FIAT, marking the end of Lancia’s independence. In the decades that followed, Lancia became part of the Fiat Group and later of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Despite shifting corporate priorities, the brand achieved extraordinary success in motorsport: beginning with the Fulvia Coupé in the late 1960s, Lancia went on to dominate the World Rally Championship with the Stratos, 037 Rally, and the legendary Delta Integrale, securing a total of 10 manufacturers’ titles between 1974 and 1992—a record unmatched at the time. Today, Lancia is a brand of Stellantis, the global automotive group formed from the 2021 merger of FCA and PSA.
