It was probably the first real uphill race in history. It was probably the first real uphill race in history.The inaugural edition of the competition, organized by the Turin newspaper "La Stampa Sportiva" was held on July 27th, 1902 to celebrate the closure of the International Automobile and Cycle Exhibition held in Turin in 1902. The route linked the city of Susa with the Cenisio pass, on the border with France, it measured 22,500 meters. The overall difference in height of 1,605 meters with average slopes of 10% and peaks of more than 13% made it the most demanding and prestigious competition of the period.
