Sonoma Raceway is a permanent road-racing circuit and drag strip located at Sears Point, in the southern Sonoma Mountains of Sonoma County, California, approximately 30 miles (48 km) north of San Francisco and Oakland. Opened in 1968, it was originally known as Sears Point Raceway, a name used from 1967 to 1980 and again from 1982 to 2002. It briefly became Golden State International Raceway in 1981, was renamed Infineon Raceway from 2002 to 2012, and subsequently adopted its current name. The original full road course measures approximately 2.52 miles and features 12 turns over a hilly and technically demanding layout, with around 160 ft (49 m) of total elevation change. Several alternative configurations have also been used for different categories. The circuit has hosted major American automobile and motorcycle competitions, including the NASCAR Cup Series, IndyCar Series, NHRA drag racing and events organised by the American Federation of Motorcyclists. It has also long supported amateur, club and historic racing, including meetings sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America and the Historic Motor Sports Association. The venue was acquired by Speedway Motorsports in 1996 and continues to operate as Sonoma Raceway.
