Sandro Munari (born in Cavarzere, March 27, 1940) is a former Italian rally driver, universally known by the nickname “Il Drago di Cavarzere.” Considered one of the greatest Italian rally stars of all time, he built an exceptional career at the wheel of Lancia cars. Munari first rose to prominence in the late 1960s with the Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF “Fanalone,” achieving memorable victories such as the 1972 Monte Carlo Rally, which helped secure the International Championship for Manufacturers for Lancia that same year. His partnership with co-driver Mario Mannucci became legendary, combining speed, precision, and tactical brilliance. The height of his career came with the Lancia Stratos HF, the first car purpose-built for rallying, designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and powered by a Ferrari Dino V6. With the Stratos, Munari dominated the Monte Carlo Rally with three consecutive wins (1975, 1976, 1977) and contributed to Lancia’s three manufacturers’ titles in the World Rally Championship. In 1977 he also became the first Italian driver to win the FIA Cup for Drivers, the forerunner of the World Rally Championship for Drivers, sealing his place in rallying history. Beyond his victories, Munari is remembered for his fighting spirit, his consistency across different terrains, and his key role in establishing Lancia as a global force in rallying. His legacy endures as that of a pioneer and national icon, whose name remains inseparable from the golden age of Italian rallying.
