The Pomona Road Races were a series of sports car events held in Pomona, California, primarily during the early to mid-1950s. Organized under the auspices of the California Sports Car Club (Cal Club)—an affiliate of the SCCA—these races took place on a temporary circuit set up on the grounds of the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, incorporating parts of the roadways and parking lots. These events were part of the thriving Southern California racing scene and attracted many of the top West Coast drivers, including Phil Hill, Ken Miles, John von Neumann, Jack McAfee, and Ernie McAfee. European sports cars such as Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche, Allard, and Osca featured prominently, and the races were key showcases for new machinery imported from Europe. The track layout was relatively flat but technical, and Pomona served as a proving ground for drivers and cars alike before more permanent circuits such as Riverside or Laguna Seca came into prominence. Though the races eventually ceased as urban development and safety concerns increased, the Pomona Road Races remain a nostalgic and historically important piece of postwar American sports car racing, particularly for their role in launching and nurturing Ferrari’s reputation on U.S. soil.
We'll tell the story of this event on the occasion of its anniversary or when it will reach a sufficient number of cars.
