The Nürburgring is a motor racing complex located near Nürburg, in the Eifel Mountains of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Constructed between 1925 and 1927, it originally comprised two circuits, the Nordschleife (North Loop) and Südschleife (South Loop), which could be combined into a 28.265 km layout. The Nordschleife alone measured 22.810 km and was characterised by considerable elevation changes, numerous corners and a demanding course through the surrounding forests. The circuit opened on 18 June 1927 and soon became one of Europe's principal venues for Grand Prix, sports car and motorcycle racing. Over the following decades, it hosted numerous editions of the German Grand Prix, as well as major endurance events including the ADAC 1000 Kilometres and, from 1970, the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Its particularly demanding nature earned the Nordschleife the nickname “Green Hell”, popularised by Formula One driver Jackie Stewart. Despite extensive safety improvements during the early 1970s, increasing vehicle performance and the circuit's exceptional length made it progressively unsuitable for Formula One. The 1976 German Grand Prix, marked by Niki Lauda's serious accident, was the last World Championship Formula One race held on the Nordschleife. A new, shorter Grand Prix circuit was inaugurated in May 1984, replacing the former Südschleife and allowing international racing to continue at the venue. Further modifications resulted in the present 5.148 km Grand Prix layout, while the Nordschleife was shortened to 20.832 km, with 73 officially recognised corners and approximately 300 metres of elevation difference. The original circuit remains in use for endurance racing, manufacturer testing and public driving sessions, while the Grand Prix circuit has hosted Formula One, DTM and other international competitions. Together, the two layouts have maintained the Nürburgring's position as one of the most historically significant motor racing venues in Europe.
