Maximilian Edwin “Max” Hoffman (Vienna, 12 November 1904 – 9 August 1981) was an Austrian-born automobile importer and dealer who became one of the most influential figures in the introduction of European sports and luxury cars to the United States after the Second World War. Based in New York, he represented marques including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, Alfa Romeo and others, and often encouraged manufacturers to develop models specifically suited to the American market. His influence contributed to the creation of cars such as the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, Porsche 356 Speedster, BMW 507 and Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider. Hoffman was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2003. His Manhattan showroom at 430 Park Avenue and his private residence in Rye, New York, were both designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
