#GoodwoodMotorCircuit
The Goodwood Motor Circuit is a historic motor racing circuit located near Chichester, West Sussex, England. Developed from the perimeter road of RAF Westhampnett, a former military airfield established during the Second World War, the circuit officially opened on 18 September 1948 under the patronage of Freddie March, 9th Duke of Richmond. Goodwood's association with motorsport had begun in 1936, when March organised a private hillclimb for members of the Lancia Car Club on the Goodwood Estate. The opening race meeting in 1948 attracted 85 drivers and more than 15,000 spectators, marking an important stage in the revival of British motor racing following the closure of Brooklands in 1939. Measuring 2.367 miles (3.809 km), the circuit became one of Britain's principal racing venues during the 1950s and 1960s. Between 1948 and 1966, it hosted numerous national and international competitions, including non-championship Formula One races, sports car and Grand Touring events, and 71 British Automobile Racing Club Members' Meetings. Major competitions included the Richmond, Goodwood and Glover Trophies, the Lavant Cup and seven editions of the RAC Tourist Trophy between 1958 and 1964. The circuit also hosted the Goodwood Nine Hours in 1952, 1953 and 1955, an endurance race running from 3 p.m. until midnight. All three editions were won by Aston Martin, with a DB3 in 1952 and DB3S models in 1953 and 1955. Increasing vehicle performance and safety concerns led to the cessation of contemporary motor racing in August 1966, although Goodwood continued to be used for testing and other motoring activities. On 18 September 1998, exactly fifty years after its inauguration, the circuit reopened for historic racing with the first Goodwood Revival. The traditional Members' Meeting was subsequently reinstated in 2014. The circuit retains substantially its original layout and remains an established venue for historic motorsport.
We'll tell the story of this circuit on the occasion of its anniversary or when it will reach a sufficient number of cars.
