Giuseppe Alotta, also known by the pseudonym "Solimecos", was an Italian racing driver active in the late 1950s and early 1960s, particularly involved in Sicilian and endurance racing events. In 1959, Alotta took part in the 43rd Targa Florio, driving a Maserati A6GCS/53 (chassis no. 2064) alongside the young Nino Vaccarella. The pair finished 10th overall and 3rd in class—an impressive result given the challenging nature of the course and the competitiveness of the field. In 1960, he achieved a class victory in the Monte Pellegrino hillclimb, confirming his skills in uphill competitions. In 1961, Alotta competed in the 1000 km of Paris, sharing a Maserati 6C 2-litre with Swiss driver Maurice Caillet. He was also associated with the Scuderia Partenopea, an Italian racing team active during that period, which entered cars in both national and international events. The nickname “Solimecos” frequently appeared in race reports of the time, although its exact origin remains unclear. Alotta’s career exemplifies the passion and commitment of Italian gentleman drivers of the era, who contributed significantly to the country’s motorsport heritage.
