#CronoscalataSvolteDiPopoli
The Cronoscalata Svolte di Popoli is an Italian hillclimb competition held on the mountain road connecting Popoli, in Abruzzo, with the area of San Benedetto in Perillis. Established by the Automobile Club Pescara following the discontinuation of the Coppa Acerbo and the Pescara Grand Prix, the first edition took place on 13 October 1963 and was won by Cesare Toppetti. The original course measured approximately 8 km, following a winding ascent characterised by numerous bends, changes in gradient and fast sections. Traditionally held around mid-August, the event became an established fixture of Italian hillclimb racing, attracting competitors such as Romano “Shangri-Là” Martini, Edoardo Lualdi, Carlo “Riccardone” Benelli, Mauro Nesti and Domenico Scola. In 1984, the course was extended to 10.1 km for its inclusion in the European Hill Climb Championship, before returning to a shorter configuration in 1994. Since 2006, the competition has generally been contested over two timed runs on a 7.53 km course, with an elevation difference of approximately 475 metres. Mauro Nesti holds the distinction of winning the event eleven times. Originally organised by the Automobile Club Pescara, the competition has subsequently been managed by ASD Svolte di Popoli and has continued to feature in Italian national hillclimb championships, alongside competitions for historic racing cars.
