#CarrozzerieSpecialiFiat

Fiat’s in-house coachbuilding activity originated from the company’s progressive involvement in the construction of complete automobiles. After initially relying on external specialists to body its chassis, Fiat took control of Carrozzeria Lanza in 1910 and transformed it into its own Reparto Carrozzerie. For some years, this department operated with a degree of independence, also carrying out work for outside clients and even for chassis of other marques. In 1925, the operation was reorganized as the Sezione Carrozzerie Speciali, supporting the new Lingotto factory. The former Via Nizza premises were sold to Società Anonima Microtecnica in 1931, while coachbuilding activities, including special bodies, were definitively incorporated into the Lingotto complex. In later years, the name Carrozzerie Speciali Fiat — also associated with the Officine Lingotto — identified the department responsible for special, limited-production, and prestige bodies, created to allow Fiat to compete with the leading independent coachbuilders. The presence of specific “Fiat Carrozzerie Speciali – Officine Lingotto” badges appears to be especially associated with postwar production, and should therefore be used with caution when attributing earlier cars unless supported by model-specific documentation. Under figures such as Dante Giacosa and designer Luigi Rapi, Carrozzerie Speciali Fiat produced some of the marque’s most refined special-bodied cars before ceasing activity in the early 1960s.

We'll tell the story of this coachbuilder on the occasion of its anniversary or when it will reach a sufficient number of cars.
