#BolzanoMendola

The Bolzano–Mendola hill climb was a major Italian- and European-level event held on the SS42 from Bolzano (or later from Appiano) up to the Mendel Pass. First run in 1930, the race originally spanned about 26 km, later shortened to 14.4 km after 1956. It featured a challenging climb of almost 1 000 m up to around 1 360 m elevation. The event counted toward the Italian Hill Climb Championship for decades and, in 1965, was included in the World Sportscar Championship. It also formed part of the European Hill Climb Championship in 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1981. Over 43 editions run from 1930 to 1988, the race drew top drivers such as Eugenio Castellotti, Ludovico Scarfiotti, Jochen Rindt, Herbert Demetz, and Mauro Nesti, and featured cars from manufacturers like Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Abarth, Osella, Lola, and BMW. The race was discontinued after a fatal accident in 1981 and the final event was held in 1988. Since 2007 the route has been used for historic motorsport gatherings—sometimes under the name Trofeo Giovanni Agnelli—and forms part of both the Italian and FIA Historic Hill Climb Championships, preserving its standing as a classic alpine hill climb competition.
