The BRDC International Trophy was one of Britain’s leading international single-seater races, held at Silverstone and organised by the British Racing Drivers’ Club. First staged in 1949 as the Daily Express International Trophy, it was sponsored by the Daily Express and run for cars complying with contemporary Grand Prix regulations. From 1950 it became one of Britain’s principal non-championship Formula One races, attracting many of the leading teams and drivers of the period and standing alongside the Race of Champions as a major fixture outside the World Championship. After the final Formula One-era running in 1978, the International Trophy continued for Formula Two from 1979 to 1984, before adopting Formula 3000 regulations in 1985. The Trophy thus remained associated with top-level international single-seater racing for several decades after its original Formula One period.
