September 24, 2024

The legend of the “Mantovano Volante” comes alive once more at the Gran Premio Nuvolari. This beautiful event, conceived and organized since 1991 by Mantova Corse in tribute to the great driver, took place again this year from September 19 to 22, covering a route of approximately 1,100 km through central and northern Italy’s scenic landscapes.

Now in its 34th edition, the Gran Premio Nuvolari witnessed a victory by the team of Andrea Vesco and Roberto Vesco, previous winners of nine Gran Premio Nuvolari, driving a stunning 1935 FIAT 508 S Balilla Sport, counted among the AUTOMOTIVE MASTERPIECES. “It was a beautiful and challenging race ... we already won the Mille Miglia, and the GP Nuvolari was our other goal this year … we had fun and also had to stay very focused, as we couldn’t afford any mistakes,” commented Andrea Vesco.

After a nail-biting duel down to hundredths of a second, second place went to Tonconogy - Ruffini (also second in 2017), driving a 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS Zagato Spider. Third was the team of Fontanella-Covelli in a 1927 Lancia Lambda Spyder. The fourth place finishers were Erejomovich-Garcea in a 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 SS. Leading the under-30s and coming in fifth overall were the young team of Barcella-Rossoni, driving a 1938 FIAT 508 C.

The event drew an excellent turnout, with 300 selected teams from around the world. Thirty-five automotive brands participated, featuring cars from 1919 to 1981, along with a showcase of modern GTs. Notably, there was a strong presence of 1950s cars and 85 pre-war vehicles. This edition also saw the participation of seven women’s teams and thirteen under-30 teams, underscoring a generational shift among vintage car enthusiasts.

At the Gran Premio Nuvolari, AUTOMOTIVE MASTERPIECES took center stage. In addition to the overall winner, the Balilla Sport sn 508S083476 of Andrea and Roberto Vesco, and the 1927 Lancia Lambda Spider sn 15725 of Fontanella-Covelli, which finished third overall, several others completed the race: the 1927 Amilcar CGSS sn 41097 of Gatta-Piccinelli, 14th; the 1935 Fiat 508 S Balilla Sport sn 508S068686 of Reidie-Colbert, 23rd; and the B.N.C. Sensitive to environmental sustainability, the event organizers launched the “Gran Premio Nuvolari Green” initiative in 2020, planting trees to offset CO₂ emissions from historic vehicles. This year, they introduced an additional effort by distributing eco-friendly water bottles and placing water dispensers for all attendees. The event complied with F.I.A, F.I.V.A., and A.C.I. Sport regulations, with particular attention to the National Sports Federation’s safety protocols.
