Renault is a French car manufacturer founded in 1898 in Paris on the initiative of the entrepreneur Louis Renault. Established as one of the largest car manufacturers in the country, during the Nazi occupation in World War II it was forced to produce vehicles and armaments for the invading government. After the war and the death of the founder, who was also accused of collaborating with Nazism, the company came under state control under the name of Régie nationale des usines Renault and for about half a century it remained in public hands: during this period it was consolidated as one of the largest manufacturers in Europe and gave birth to highly successful models.
